About the museum

Duke Ludwig X of Bavaria, who lived at Trausnitz Castle as co-regent for his brother, had the foundation stone for a new residence laid in the middle of the town in 1536. The Augsburg master builder Bernhard Zwitzel began construction in the German Renaissance style, the later “Deutscher Bau” (German Wing). Inspired by a trip to northern Italy and especially by the Palazzo Te in Mantua, a second palace, the “Italienischer Bau” (Italian Wing), followed from 1537; the complex was completed in 1543.

Inside, Italian stuccoists created the vaulted halls, and the painters Herman Posthumus, Hans Bocksberger the Elder and Ludwig Refinger decorated them with picture cycles on biblical, mythological and historical themes. From 1780 to 1799 the residence was the court of Count Palatine Wilhelm of Birkenfeld-Gelnhausen; during this time the facade facing the old town received its neoclassical appearance.

The guided tour covers the halls of the Italian Wing, the residence chapel and the Birkenfeld rooms, where neoclassical French wallpapers from around 1803 were uncovered during restoration between 1993 and 2003. The Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung (Bavarian Palace Administration) manages the building; due to construction work it is currently closed to visitors until further notice.
