About the museum

The ReichsdorfMuseum in Gochsheim, in the district of Schweinfurt, came into being in 1982, when the Historischer Förderkreis Gochsheim-Weyer (historical support association) was founded on April 27 and the museum was launched at the same time. Countless hours of volunteer work, grants from the municipality, the district, the Bezirk Unterfranken (Lower Franconia administrative district) and the Landesstelle für nichtstaatliche Museen (state agency for non-state museums), as well as many private donations, made the village museum possible. Most exhibits come from Gochsheim residents or from the region.

It is housed in the Franconian Kirchgaden complex around the Protestant church, which once served as the village's inner defensive ring. Across 18 rooms, the museum shows rural and craft life over the past two centuries. The house also includes a typesetter's workshop with bookbinding, a cooper's workshop and a bicycle collection.

The bicycle collection traces the history across six rooms, from Drais’ Laufrad (running machine) of 1817 through high-wheelers and the Niederrad (safety bicycle) with chain drive, to accessories such as hubs, speedometers and lamps. It commemorates Philipp Moritz Fischer of Schweinfurt, who was involved in the invention of pedals. The "Reichsdorfweg" (Reichsdorf trail) leads to further historic sites in the village, such as the Gaden, the Schwebheimer Tor (gate) and the tithe barn.
