About the museum
The core of the collection is the bird collection of the Schuler brothers. At the end of the 19th century, Ludwig Schuler sent numerous bird skins from Madagascar to his hometown; in 1892 the family donated more than 300 taxidermied birds to Schweinfurt, mostly European species.
The birds stand in glass cases with dioramas that recreate their natural habitats. Photos, drawings and panels explain the basics of ornithology, such as anatomy, egg size and bird migration; QR codes provide further information and bird calls.
The collection is housed in the classicist Harmonie building on the Main riverbank, which was originally built as the clubhouse of the Harmonie society and reduced in size during the construction of the new Main bridge. Since 1988 it has housed the Naturkundemuseum.
