About the museum
Johanngeorgenstadt was founded in 1654 by Bohemian refugees fleeing religious persecution, as the last significant mining town in the Saxon Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge). From 1671 the adit was driven along the Frisch-Glück-Spat at the Fastenberg. From 1682 it yielded silver ore and developed into the richest mine in the town. A large Kunstrad, a water-powered wheel, lifted the mine water early on.
In 1838, several Fastenberg mines were merged into one mining association (Gewerkschaft); around 1840 a new Rösche was built, which is today the access to the show mine. The price of silver later fell, and bismuth and uranium ores were increasingly mined. After 1945 the mine belonged to the Soviet-run Wismut and was of great importance for uranium mining.
The mine was flooded in 1958. In 1974 the development of small sections as a technical show facility began. From 1991 the guided program was expanded and scientifically revised, and in the 1990s restorations with funding followed, along with a new Huthaus.
Today miners lead visitors through the adits and by mine railway at about 8 degrees Celsius. A multimedia installation makes parts of the mine accessible to guests who cannot go underground, and in winter Mettenschichten (traditional miners' midnight shifts) are offered.
