About the museum
The railway reached Wismar in 1848 with the line from Schwerin; a locomotive station of the Schwerin depot was built there, from which the independent Wismar railway depot (Bahnbetriebswerk, Bw) emerged in 1935. The facilities include a twelve-stall circular engine shed from 1890, a water tower and a 23-meter-long turntable, which are now listed as historic monuments. At the end of 1993, the depot was dissolved as a separate facility; railway operation ended in 1997, and afterwards the site fell into disrepair.
In 2000, railway workers and railway enthusiasts founded the Eisenbahnfreunde Wismar e. V. association. In 2007 the Hanseatic City of Wismar acquired the engine shed, the turntable and the outbuildings, renewed the roof and gable, and handed the site over to the association on favorable terms; the association has since maintained and restored it.
The collection focuses on vehicles connected with Wismar: locomotives from the Reichsbahn era, such as the Kö II, industrial locomotives of the region (V 22 B, N 4b), and vehicles of the former railcar and wagon factory in Wismar, including a tram car from 1926. In 2024 the railcar SB M1, built in 1927, returned from Denmark to its place of manufacture; in addition, a water crane was set up again and buried pits were uncovered.
