About the museum

The Technisches Landesmuseum (state museum of technology) goes back to the Polytechnic Museum founded in Schwerin in 1961, which initially used rooms in Schwerin Palace. After German reunification, the museum faced closure in the mid-1990s; in 1996 the Verein Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was founded, bringing together institutions, companies and private individuals and securing its continued operation.

From 1997, the exhibition was on display in the Schwerin Marstall (former royal stables), and in 2003 a branch in Wismar was added. In early 2011, the Schwerin site closed and the collection moved to Wismar. There, on December 1, 2012, the phanTECHNIKUM opened on a former barracks site near the Bürgerpark as a joint interactive museum of the state, the association and the Hanseatic city.

The exhibition, covering around 2,500 square meters, organizes the history of technology according to the elements of water, air, fire and earth, combining historic objects with numerous experiment stations. The collection comprises some 6,500 objects, including the glider “Jung Mecklenburg” from 1933, a combustion chamber from an A4 rocket and extensive holdings of communications and computing technology. With its technikSCHULE, the museum is also an out-of-school learning venue; it is operated by a non-profit company whose shareholder is the association.
