Ludwig-Leichhardt-Museum
Volunteer-run museum in Trebatsch on the Australia explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, born here, with a schoolroom and local history.
About the museum
Ludwig Leichhardt was born in Trebatsch in 1813 and attended the village school here, before going on to the Gymnasium in Cottbus and then the universities in Berlin and Göttingen. In 1842 he reached Australia, undertook the first overland journey from Moreton Bay to Port Essington in 1844/45, and in 1848 vanished without a trace with his expedition.
On the explorer's 175th birthday, a museum opened in his birthplace in 1988. Since October 1990 the house has been run by the Gesellschaft Ludwig Leichhardt Trebatsch e.V.; its members look after it on a voluntary basis and offer tours. After the library moved out in 2003, a large Leichhardt and event room and a room on local history were created. In 2011 a Leichhardt-Platz with a larger-than-life bust was laid out in front of the building.
The exhibition comprises four rooms: the Leichhardt room on his life and expeditions, a replica schoolroom, a section on the crafts of the region in Leichhardt's time and a room on the thousand-year history of Trebatsch. Every month the association invites people to talks, concerts or film evenings and every October hosts the Leichhardt-Lauf, which recalls the young Leichhardt's school route to Cottbus. A hiking loop of about eleven kilometers following in his footsteps also begins at the museum.
