Children's museum in the former Eliaskirche in Prenzlauer Berg, with interactive exhibitions, a climbing frame and workbenches for children aged 3 to 12.
Exhibition on why women artists are often overlooked and valued less. On show are ceramics, photographs, paintings, videos and textile installations, and it addresses children's right to culture and creative development.
About the museum
The roots of MACHmit! Museum go back to 1992, when the association Netzwerk Spiel/Kultur launched the project "Kinder & Jugend Museum Prenzlauer Berg." The first activity was a museum wagon; in 1993 came the first exhibition, on soap. Until the end of 2000, the project presented exhibitions in a shop on Schivelbeiner Straße. In 2000 the non-profit company (gGmbH) was founded.
From autumn 2001 to August 2003, the Eliaskirche, consecrated in 1910, was renovated and converted into a children's museum. The building is leased under a hereditary building right (Erbbaurecht) from the Protestant regional church. In the former nave stands a seven-meter-high climbing frame.
The concept has three parts: interactive exhibitions developed with children and based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, movement on the climbing frame, and changing creative activities at workbenches. There is also children's cinema, holiday workshops and projects with day-care centers and schools. Before the pandemic, the museum welcomed more than 80,000 visitors a year.
