About the museum
The art collection of the Pankow district is comparatively young and small, but its history is closely tied to postwar Berlin administration and to art in East Berlin. Its core consists of acquisitions and commissions from local artists, made from the 1960s on, mainly between 1970 and 1996, in the districts of Pankow, Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee.
After the district merger in 2001, the scattered holdings were recorded and inventoried uniformly for the first time. Today the collection comprises about 4,000 works by roughly 650 artists. The focus is on graphics and portfolios, alongside painting on paper and individual paintings and sculptures. It documents, among others, representatives of the "Berliner Schule" and of Berlin lyrical abstraction of the late 1970s.
Since 1996 the holdings have been expanded mainly through donations, such as drawings by Egmont Schaefer, etchings by Charlotte E. Pauly and works on paper from the estate of Klaus Roenspieß. Selected works can be viewed online at museum-digital:berlin; the collection is a member of the Network of Graphic Collections.
