About the museum
The museum was founded in February 1999 on the initiative of the Heimatverein Dranske, a local history society established in 1998. The former post office rooms were refurbished, and the first exhibition opened on 19 May 1999. By 2002 the exhibition space had grown and a room on the history of the Bug peninsula had been added. Since June 2012 the museum has been housed in the old school of Dranske; it is run by volunteer members of the society.
It presents the more than 710-year history of the village, supported by many original contemporary artefacts, photos and documents that the society has received as donations or long-term loans. The story runs from the first documentary mention of the village in 1314 and the Swedish period (1684 to 1815), through the naval aviators of the Imperial Navy from 1916 and the Luftwaffe from 1930, to the fast attack craft of the GDR Volksmarine from 1960.
The old village of smallholders and cottagers was reshaped from 1934 by the Luftwaffe's garden city, followed in the 1960s by prefabricated housing blocks for the Volksmarine; after 1990 the military base was abandoned, and from 2002 the village demolished numerous buildings. The society's publication series explores the history of the village and of the Bug peninsula in greater depth.
