About the museum
The museum is located in the residential house of an old Hintersassengut (small tenant farm) in Liebertwolkwitz, a half-timbered building that was rebuilt in 1808 after a fire. In October 1813 the house was damaged during the Battle of the Nations. It remained in family ownership for 135 years, was expropriated in 1953, and was returned to the heirs in 1993.
Committed history enthusiasts of the Interessenverband Völkerschlacht 1813 have saved the association building from demolition since 1980 and rebuilt it through years of work. In 1995 the Museum zur Völkerschlacht (Battle of the Nations Museum) was established there, focusing especially on the military events in the surrounding villages.
The exhibition traces the course of the autumn campaign of 1813, from the marching movements through the cavalry battle of October 14 to the burdens on the population from billeting and destruction. Weapons, equipment, and ground finds, paintings and dioramas, and a re-staged billeting scene bring the period to life.
