About the museum
The museum was prompted by the eyewitness account of Auguste Vater, daughter of the Seifertshain pastor, about the fighting and the field hospital in October 1813. In 1995 the Interessenverein Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig 1813 (Interest Association for the Battle of Leipzig), together with the local pastor, set up a small museum in an old barn, dedicated to the suffering of the wounded and the help given by the villagers.
After the former village school was renovated by the municipality of Großpösna, rooms on the upper floor were added in 2002. For the 2003 commemorative year, the Soziokulturelles Zentrum KuHstall, together with other associations, designed three rooms on military medicine around 1813. A thorough redesign, developed by students of HTWK Leipzig, led to the reopening on September 29, 2013, in time for the commemorations of the Battle of the Nations.
Today the exhibition shows which weapons were used at the time, what injuries they caused and how the armies cared for their wounded; the French chief surgeon Larrey is also honored. Tin-figure dioramas, battlefield finds from the surroundings and listening stations illustrate the theme, and a high-speed film shows the effect of a lead bullet. In the museum barn one can see, among other things, Larrey's "flying ambulance". The historic ensemble of church, cemetery, parsonage and barn is largely preserved.
