About the museum
Since the late 19th century Schwalenberg has been regarded as a painters' town: artists, mainly from Düsseldorf and Berlin, spent their summer months here working in the landscape. The heyday of this artists' colony lay between 1920 and the beginning of the Second World War. Since 1978 the Landesverband Lippe (Lippe regional association) and the town of Schieder-Schwalenberg have continued this tradition with a joint cultural program.
The Städtische Galerie on Marktstraße preserves a picture collection from the time of the artists' colony and shows it in changing displays. In addition, special exhibitions of supra-regional art of the 19th and 20th centuries are presented, with a focus on classical modernism, graphic art and the landscape painting associated with artists' colonies; they are often developed in cooperation with major museums and private collectors.
Over the years, works by Max Beckmann, Karl Hofer, Niki de Saint Phalle and Bernhard Heisig, among others, have been shown here. The gallery is run by the Lippische Kulturagentur of the Landesverband Lippe together with the town; the nearby Robert Koepke Haus additionally shows contemporary art.
