About the museum
The poet Eduard Mörike lived as a pastor in Cleversulzbach from 1834. For many years his memory was kept alive by a Mörike room in the inn “Zum alten Turmhahn,” lovingly looked after by the landlady Margarete Seebold. After her death, Mörike friends from the village worked to keep the collection together and show it appropriately again.
The town of Neuenstadt acquired the items from her estate with the support of a local bank. The Office for Literary Museums at the German Literature Archive in Marbach designed the exhibition, which opened on September 6, 1996, in a former schoolhouse next to St. Jost Church. The museum is looked after by a circle of friends who volunteer on Sundays and public holidays.
In 2004 two more rooms in the front part of the old school were added, likewise furnished by designers from the Marbach archive. On display are writings, poems, and drawings as well as everyday objects of the poet, plus a copy of the famous Turmhahn (tower rooster). Since 2013 there has also been an exhibition of restored boundary stones from local history in the basement.
