The imposing building from the mid-18th century was originally part of a ducal Württemberg estate farm and served as a sheep barn until the farm came into municipal ownership in 1850. After extensive restoration, it opened in 1991 as the Museum im Schafstall.
The city of Neuenstadt am Kocher presents exhibitions by well-known artists from Germany and abroad here, beneath the impressive roof structure and in the gallery, with a focus on contemporary art. Together with the Verein für Geschichte und Heimatkunde (Association for History and Local Heritage), the city has also established the series "Kultur im Schafstall" with concerts, cabaret and theater, making the house a cultural forum for the region.
The permanent exhibition is devoted to local history: it tells the story of the Württemberg-Neuenstadt ducal family, shows old city maps, engravings and historical maps, and includes a memorial to the Mörike family, whose Württemberg homeland is Neuenstadt and from which the poet Eduard Mörike descended. Since 2026, Dr. Sabine Rehm-Deutinger has led the museum.
