About the museum
The museum center at Maxplatz in Rehau brings together several collections on city and regional history under one roof. One focus is Rehau's role as the only "Modellstadt" (model town) in Bavaria: after the devastating city fire of 1817, the city layout was completely replanned to prevent future fires. Two city models show the town before and after the fire; in addition there are contemporary witness accounts and firefighting equipment, from the first fire bucket to modern technology.
A separate exhibition is dedicated to Hans Vogt, who came from the village district of Wurlitz and is regarded as a co-inventor of the optical sound film. It presents his biography, personal belongings and the Tri-Ergon process. Other areas show the historic Zapf pharmacy (Drogerie), a forge, the railway collection donated by Rüdiger Hofmann, and a mechanical workshop as a record of the town's economic history.
The Ascher Sammlung (Asch collection) is set up as a small local museum for the Asch region and, with more than 1,000 items, counts among the significant Sudeten German small museums. The Silesian Collection and the Roßbacher Weberstuben (weavers' rooms) preserve the memory of the homeland of the expellees.
