About the museum
The engine shed belongs to the former Selb-Stadt railway depot (Bahnbetriebswerk), a branch of the Hof depot. When steam locomotive operation came to an end in northeastern Bavaria in the 1970s, several railway enthusiasts in Selb joined together and founded the Modell- und Eisenbahn-Club Selb/Rehau (MuEC).
The first original vehicle in the collection was the works locomotive of the Heinrich porcelain factory, which gave up its rail siding in 1977. It was followed by the standard-design steam locomotive 64 019, the G10 beer cooling wagon of a Kulmbach brewery and a Donnerbüchse. The club restored the vehicles and maintained the grounds, and in 1987 it staged a large exhibition; later, open house days followed.
The club aims to preserve the facilities of the former depot, including the engine shed, turntable, locomotive servicing facilities and signal box. Using Selb as an example, the connection between regional industrialization and the railway is to become clear; the focus is on regional, works and industrial railways in northeastern Upper Franconia and their importance for the porcelain industry. A new vehicle hall as well as a presentation and depot hall are currently under construction.
