About the museum
The town museum in Aš was founded in 1892 on the initiative of the mayor Emil Schindler. The collections grew mainly thanks to donations from Aš townspeople and factory owners, and the museum struggled for a long time with a lack of space. Alongside the town museum, the Přírodovědný a kulturně historický spolek (Natural Science and Cultural-Historical Society) also operated from 1905. After the Second World War the collections suffered from relocation and theft, and since 1966 the museum has been housed in the so-called zámeček (little château) on Mikulášský vrch.
In the zámeček there is a textile exhibition and space for short-term exhibitions. It maps the former glory of the textile industry in the Aš region, which was the main source of livelihood for the local inhabitants. Visitors see spinning machines, knitting machines, weaving looms, garments, lace and pattern books. The most significant collection consists of 26,563 sample half-pairs of textile gloves, which was recorded in the Czech Book of Records in 2024.
The ethnographic exhibition is located on Poštovní náměstí (Postal Square) in the premises of the former municipal library, which until 2006 also served as a fire station; for that reason the building is called the hasičárna (fire station). The oldest artefacts of the Aš region from the 16th century, everyday objects from the 19th and first half of the 20th century, and short-term exhibitions are on display. The museum also maintains the central register of stone crosses and small monuments.
