FRITZ KLEE – Ein Selber wider Willen?

The show in Selb honors the architect and designer who headed the local technical school for the porcelain industry for three decades from 1908, with more than 150 designs and objects.

About the museum

It all began in 1982 with the Museum der Deutschen Porzellanindustrie (Museum of the German Porcelain Industry) in Hohenberg an der Eger. It moved into the former director's villa of the Hutschenreuther family, whose business is considered the first private porcelain factory in northeastern Bavaria. The aim was to document the products of the porcelain factories of the 19th and 20th centuries; in the mid-1990s a modern glass-and-steel extension was added.

When a second porcelain museum was planned in Selb from 1986, the two institutions divided the subject matter between them: the decommissioned Rosenthal factory, now an industrial monument with preserved round kilns, focuses on manufacturing, technology and the working lives of porcelain workers, while Hohenberg shows the products themselves. In 2005 a department on technical ceramics was added in Selb, now designed as the interactive exhibition "Mission: Keramik." Under the shared name Porzellanikon, the two sites together form, by their own account, the largest porcelain museum in Europe.

In 2014 the Free State of Bavaria took over the museum as a state institution. Wilhelm Siemen was its long-serving founding director; Anna Dziwetzki has headed the museum since 2020. In Selb, the history of the Rosenthal company is told, among other things, and former porcelain workers demonstrate on historic machines how porcelain was made around a hundred years ago. Hohenberg presents some 10,000 objects on the cultural history of porcelain in the German-speaking world from the 18th century to the present, complemented by changing special exhibitions and a museum garden. The museum also includes a library and archive on the German porcelain industry.
