About the museum
The painter Josef Steib was born in Munich in 1898 and discovered the Moselle region after a successful exhibition in Cochem. In 1949 he moved with his wife into the "Franzosen-Haus" on the Moselle promenade in Cochem and set up a studio and gallery there. He died in Cochem in 1957.
His work includes Moselle landscapes, portraits of people and animals, and impressions from travels to Africa, South America and southern Europe. His wife Brunhilde bequeathed the house in 1997, together with the estate, to the Stiftung Rheinland-Pfalz für Kultur (Rhineland-Palatinate Foundation for Culture), which held special exhibitions there until 2018. In 2018 the property passed to private owners, who want to preserve it as an artists' house for Cochem.
The gallery today holds around 2,600 original works by the artist; the house, with its atmosphere of times past, spans several floors.
