Burg Arras
Hilltop castle above the Alf Valley near Alf on the Moselle, with castle hotel, restaurant and a castle museum on Moselle views, Electoral Trier and Heinrich Lübke.
About the museum
Burg Arras sits atop a mountain spur above the Alf Valley near the Moselle. It is first mentioned in writing around 1120; according to tradition its origins go back to the 10th century, and the castle's owners even trace the fortified complex back to a late Roman border post. Recent research dates the keep – a good 20 meters tall with walls about four meters thick – to the mid-13th century.
French troops destroyed the castle in 1689 during the Nine Years' War (War of the Palatinate Succession); afterward it largely fell into ruin, with only the keep left standing. In the 19th century the ruin changed hands several times until mining director Traugott Wilhelm Dyckerhoff acquired it at the end of the 19th century and had it made habitable again from around 1907.
Since the late 1970s the complex has belonged to the Keuthen family, who set up a castle hotel with a restaurant there. Otto Keuthen was a nephew of Wilhelmine Lübke, wife of former German Federal President Heinrich Lübke. The castle museum therefore combines the regional history of the Middle Moselle – with a large collection of old Moselle views, portraits of the Electors of Trier, and armor and weapons – with a memorial to Heinrich Lübke displaying state gifts and personal mementos.
