About the museum
The Weinmuseum in Senheim goes back to the collecting passion of Dieter Schlagkamp senior, who for more than four decades gathered historic winegrower, cask and wine-treatment equipment. Today the collection comprises more than 10,000 exhibits, which the museum describes as unique in the world. It is housed in the family's wine house, which celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2002.
The tour begins in the historic wine cellar with Fuder casks typical of the Mosel. A staging with light and fermentation sounds illustrates the path of the grapes from the vine through the press and the cask into the glass, and voice boxes provide additional information in German, English and Dutch. A staircase leads to the old press house, where equipment for pressing, bottling and corking is on display.
The tour ends in the banquet hall built in 1923, where most of the exhibits are displayed. Among the best-known pieces is the figure “Venus mosellana”, which the artist Hans-Günther Obermaier carved from an old oak beam and presented in 2002 for the wine house's anniversary. The museum is run by Wein + Museum Schlagkamp-Desoye GmbH.
