About the museum
The Wine and Local History Museum is located in Zell's historic town hall, built in 1882, which was most recently renovated. It tells the story of the wine town from Celtic and Roman settlement into the 20th century.
On display are stone axes, grinding stones, pottery and gold coins from the Celtic period, as well as reconstructed parts of a Roman bathhouse discovered in 1987, including the hypocaust heating. One room is devoted to wine-growing, with its tradition of almost 1,100 years, the name of the vineyard "Zeller Schwarze Katz", and the tools of winegrowers and coopers.
Further sections cover cigar manufacturing, which produced more than ten companies in Zell from 1850 onward, the rope-making trade, which lasted until about 1935, and the life of the Jewish community, which ended with the Pogromnacht of 1938. The original clockwork of the town hall clock and a photo exhibition on the 1993 flood round out the tour.
