About the museum
The museum goes back to the collector Rudolf Hofmann, who gathered everything he considered worth preserving until his death in 1986. Contrary to the spirit of the times, he collected Altkohren ceramics, farmhouse furniture, costumes, toys, historic furniture, pewter and textiles, above all objects that tell of the cultural history of the Kohren region south of Leipzig and the surrounding manor estates. After 1945 he was active in the Kulturbund der DDR and founded the Töpfermuseum (pottery museum) of Kohren-Sahlis.
His parents' house on the market square had been a dye works until the end of the 19th century; later his wife Ursula ran a hand-weaving business here. At the beginning of the 1980s the Hofmanns donated their collection to the state, with the proviso that a museum be set up later, and they continued to live in and with the collection. After reunification, the town of Kohren-Sahlis took over the collection and, after Ursula Hofmann's death, the buildings as well. The museum has been open to visitors since 1999.
Since 2014 the house has also displayed, on loan, Sporbert's collection of dollhouses and toys. The museum is one of the three Kohren museums of the town of Frohburg.
