About the museum

The Schwind-Pavillon is the former music salon of the orangery of the Rüdigsdorf manor. The client was the estate owner Heinrich Wilhelm Leberecht Crusius, who inherited the estate in 1824, converted it into a summer residence, and had a landscape park laid out. The orangery was built between 1829 and 1839; alongside the glazed greenhouse in the central building, the side pavilions housed the gardener's residence and the hall for music and socializing. The interior was designed by Woldemar Hermann of Dresden, and Gottfried Semper also gave advice on the wall design.

Crusius, himself active in the Leipzig and Saxon art associations, won several renowned artists for the painted decoration on the theme of Cupid and Psyche. Gustav Adolph Hennig created the round ceiling painting, surrounded by the signs of the zodiac, and Otto Wagner the ornamental ceiling structure with tendrils of the four seasons. From 1838, Moritz von Schwind, later a leading representative of German late Romanticism, painted the large murals after which the room is now named, together with his Viennese friend Leopold Schulz.

Since 1968, the hall has been a museum, at first of the town of Kohren-Sahlis, now part of the Museen Kohren-Sahlis of the town of Frohburg. The listed room is regarded as a very well preserved example of Neoclassical interior art. In the summer months it is open to visitors and is also used for concerts and civil weddings.
