About the museum
The Old Town Hall on the northwest corner of the Stadtplatz in Pfarrkirchen dates from around 1500. Its core is Gothic, the octagonal domed tower is Renaissance and the bell-shaped roof is Baroque. Above the oriel, a stucco coat of arms of Elector Karl Theodor from 1787 is displayed, and the medieval council bell still hangs in the tower lantern.
After extensive renovation and conversion work, completed in 2018, several institutions share the building: the tourist information is on the first floor, along with the adult education center (Volkshochschule), a wedding room and the Ratssaal (council chamber) used for art exhibitions. The local history museum is on the third floor.
The collection combines archaeological, folk-life, craft and local history objects from three centuries from the town and its surroundings. On display are, among other things, holy water stoups and Hafnerware (glazed earthenware), rural and household tools, and evidence of crafts such as indigo block printing, pewter casting and textile production. Alternating with a collection of votive panels, the town of Pfarrkirchen regularly holds art exhibitions.
