Marking the 120th birthday of the graphic artist and photographer: light images made from mirrored line and grid structures, screen prints and wall designs from the family estate.
Cultural history exhibition on how towns and landscapes in southwestern Germany were idealized in the 20th century – with artworks, porcelain, postcards and tourism posters.
Solo exhibition of the sculptor, who shapes delicate roots, blossoms and mushrooms from used textiles, exploring themes of growth and transience.
About the museum
The Galerie der Stadt Kornwestheim (municipal gallery) was founded in 1975 and initially showed temporary exhibitions in the Kulturhaus without a collection of its own. The impetus for a dedicated building came from an extensive donation from the estate of the painter Manfred Henninger, after which the city council decided on a new building in 1987.
The design was by the architect Josef Paul Kleihues. Built in 1988/89 and opened on November 24, 1989, the building is composed of basic geometric shapes such as the circle, triangle and square and is clad in Cannstatt travertine. A staircase that narrows toward the top connects the two exhibition floors, which together cover around 720 square meters; a curved light ceiling and sawtooth roofs bring daylight into the rooms, and a half-rotunda is used for events. In 1990 the building received the award of the Bund Deutscher Architekten (Association of German Architects), and in 2017 it was designated a cultural monument.
Since reopening in 2003, the museum has been called Museum im Kleihues-Bau. Here the city of Kornwestheim collects 20th-century art and testimonies of local history. On the first floor, several exhibitions on painting, sculpture, photography and installation art rotate each year, while the second floor presents a cultural history theme for about a year at a time, often drawing on the municipal collection.
