Around 30 racing cars from 1951 to today explore racing classes, innovations, people and milestones of Porsche motorsport in themed areas – from the first Le Mans class win to Formula E; with a children's program.
About the museum
Porsche opened its first company museum in 1976 on its premises in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. In a former engine hall of around 620 square meters, about 20 regularly changing vehicles were on display, and admission was free. Even then, the company pursued the concept of a “rolling museum”: many exhibits remained roadworthy and continued to take part in events.
Since space had long been insufficient, Porsche decided in 2004 to build a new museum on Porscheplatz, opposite the main plant. The design came from the Vienna firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, and the exhibition concept from hg merz of Stuttgart. Construction began in October 2005, and the museum, with its striking, seemingly floating exhibition volume, was inaugurated in January 2009 and opened to the public on January 31, 2009.
The permanent exhibition tells the story of the brand chronologically through about 95 production and racing cars – starting with Ferdinand Porsche's first design, an electric vehicle, through the 1948 356 “No. 1” Roadster to generations of the 911, the 550 and the 917. The exhibits come from a collection of around 800 vehicles and are changed regularly. Through glass panes, visitors can look into the museum workshop and the company archive with millions of historical photos. In May 2024, the museum welcomed its six millionth visitor; the offering is rounded out by special exhibitions, factory tours and the Heritage Experience with historic racing cars.
