About the museum
The Johanniskapelle was built in 1497 right next to the parish church of Gerolzhofen. In October 2006, a museum titled "Kunst und Geist der Gotik" opened in the chapel and in the adjoining sexton's house.
The collection comes from the Catholic parish of Gerolzhofen, supplemented by loans from various museums and from the art collection of the Diocese of Würzburg. The diocesan art office also developed the concept of the museum. The rare and valuable pieces document the artistic development of Gothic art in the Franconian region and show how strongly the late Gothic period shaped the Diocese of Würzburg.
The focus is both on art history and on the piety of the period and its artistic expression. On view are sculptures and reliefs by well-known masters such as Tilman Riemenschneider and Hans Schäufelin, as well as wooden panel paintings, bells, a Gothic Bible and liturgical vessels. Visitors to Gerolzhofen can combine a visit to this museum with a combined ticket for the Stadtmuseum (city museum).
