Museum KeltenKeller

Volunteer-run archaeology museum in Biebertal with original Celtic finds from the oppidum on the Dünsberg.

Opening hoursFree admission

About the museum

The impetus came from the excavations on the Dünsberg between 1999 and 2004: the finds from the late Celtic town were not to disappear into distant storerooms but to stay close to where they were discovered. To that end, the association Archäologie im Gleiberger Land was founded in 2005; it opened the museum in February 2007 and has run it entirely with volunteers ever since.

The KeltenKeller (“Celts' Cellar”) is located in the basement of the municipal administration building in Rodheim-Bieber; the municipality of Biebertal provides the rooms free of charge. On around 70 square meters, visitors can see coins, fibulae (brooches), glass jewelry, parts of horse harnesses, swords, pottery, and millstones. This marks the first time an important group of finds from the Celtic period has been on permanent display in the original, right next to the Dünsberg.

The association continues to excavate on its own, has finds restored with the support of the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Hessen (Hesse State Office for Monument Preservation), and adds new objects to the display year after year. Its offerings include guided tours of the museum and the excavation sites, lectures, and a small shop with replicas and literature on the Dünsberg. According to the association, more than 1,000 visitors come each year.
