About the museum

The museum in the Zwönitz district of Dorfchemnitz is housed in a farmstead first documented in 1542. The house, more than 450 years old, stands out for its diamond-pattern half-timbering (Rautenfachwerk), which is rare in Saxony. It also includes a village bread oven and a mill extension.

The water-wheel-driven bone mill gives the museum its name. Animal bones were ground into fertilizer in it, and it is the only publicly accessible bone mill of its kind in the Ore Mountains. It shows a side of the region apart from mining: pre-industrial agriculture and life in a 19th-century village shaped by farming and cottage industry.

The house belongs to the Heimatwelten Zwönitz, the town's museum network. It is currently being comprehensively renovated with funding: the residential building, the mill technology and the outdoor grounds are being restored, and in future rural, farming life in the Ore Mountains is to take center stage. Collections on everyday rural culture, stocking production in the Zwönitz Valley, and Ore Mountains folk art with historical Christmas mountain scenes (Weihnachtsberge) are planned. Behind the house, a traditional farm garden with useful and medicinal plants has been laid out based on a historical model.
