About the museum
The museum goes back to the collector Bruno Gebhardt, born in 1894 as the son of a farmer in Kühnhaide. Without an academic career, he spent decades gathering coins, weapons and decorative arts, researching and cataloguing his pieces. In this way he built up a collection of rarities unique to the Erzgebirge, including pewter objects and a samurai armor.
It is housed in the Austelvilla in Zwönitz. Factory owner Alexander Gustav Friedrich Austel had the villa built in the Neo-Renaissance style in 1885–1886. Its original fittings, including parquet floors, stucco ceilings, wall and ceiling paintings, and doors, have been preserved. The house borders the Austelpark, an English-style landscape park from around 1890 with grottoes, adit entrances and a lion fountain.
Since 2022, a display library with Gebhardt's extensive specialist library has complemented the exhibition. The house belongs to the Heimatwelten Zwönitz, the town's museum network.
