About the museum
The Museum Markt Kösching is located on Klosterstraße and belongs to the Markt Kösching (market municipality). It is looked after by the Geschichtsverein Kösching Kasing Bettbrunn e. V. (history association), and the museum director is Stefan Georg Balassa. It offers a broad overview of the town's history and its surroundings.
On the ground floor, archaeology takes center stage. The span runs from Neanderthals with flint tools and a mammoth tusk, through Neolithic cultures, to the Bavarians (Bajuwaren) of the early Middle Ages; Merovingian grave finds are also included. One focus is the Roman period with the Germanicum fort near Kösching. The finds include weapons, glass, terra sigillata, amphorae, and a Roman milestone discovered in 1984, on which an emperor's name has been erased.
The upper floor is devoted to market history, which begins with the first mention of the place as a market in 1310, and to crafts such as baking, tailoring, brewing, and blacksmithing, as well as agriculture, the districts of Kasing and Bettbrunn, and popular piety. In the former monastery garden, a Roman garden with reproductions of Roman inscribed stones in original size was created in 2010.
