About the museum
The collection of the Olbernhau museum was founded in 1902 as a collection of antiquities. Since 1957 it has been housed in a side wing of the former 18th-century manor (Rittergut) on the town's market square. After comprehensive reconstruction and expansion, the exhibition was redesigned.
The house tells the town's history and economic history and shows Ore Mountains folk art. On the first floor, the natural history department presents ecological connections and habitats in a room with a groin vault. On the second floor, the variety of Olbernhau's industry is the focus, from jewelry boxes decorated with pyrography, through furniture and rifles, to artfully cut glass. Special features include the folk art hall with a 3.20-meter-high pyramid, Schwibbögen (candle arches), walnut shell carvings, and the "Ulmer Münster" (Ulm Minster), a fretwork piece made over twelve years from 3,000 individual parts.
On the attic floor, visitors can set mechanical mountains with mines and a fairground in motion at the push of a button; there is also an H0 model railway layout in the style of the 1960s and 1970s. A special story is that of the Olbernhau toy wholesalers, who made Ore Mountains toys known around the world.
