About the museum
As early as around 1650, the first oil mill of the village, where linseed oil was pressed, stood in the Pockauer Marterbüschel. Of the originally 16 mills at the mouth of the Pockau into the Flöha, today's oil mill is the only one preserved in its original condition. Its water mill from 1783 still works with the old technology and is considered unique in Central Europe.
In a second, newer mill building, visitors can trace how oil extraction technology worked in the 20th century. Oil is no longer produced on the site, but the installations show the process: a 3.80-meter water wheel drives a stamping mill with five iron troughs, which crushes the flaxseed into meal. The meal is heated to about 70 degrees and then pressed out in a wedge press using hammer blows.
During the tours, visitors also learn what daily life was like for an oil miller.
