Molchner Stolln

Show mine in Pobershau (Marienberg) with guided tours through a historic silver and tin mine, including a working Kunstgezeug (water-lifting machinery).

Opening hoursAdmission from €8

About the museum

Pobershau came into being in the early 16th century as a mining settlement. The "Drey Molchen Fundgrube" mine is first mentioned in 1529 and yielded considerable quantities of silver, especially in the 16th century; the richest veins were the Molchner Spat and the Ursula Spat. After the Thirty Years' War, mining shifted to tin, and from the late 18th century arsenopyrite was also processed into arsenic powder.

Ore extraction ended in 1866, and the last mine closed in 1886. Between 1947 and 1954, SDAG Wismut searched here for ore one last time. Part of the site had already been set up as a show mine in 1934/35, which makes the Molchner Stolln one of the oldest show mines in Saxony.

The tours lead through the adit with its portal from 1822, various vault forms, a flooded blind shaft, and geological outcrops. A reconstructed, working Kunstgezeug demonstrates the historic water-lifting technology, and a separate section recalls the Wismut era. Today a leaseholder operates the show mine.
