About the museum
The building on Speyerstraße was long known as the Museum Pachen. It goes back to the collection of the Pachen couple, who over many decades assembled more than 2,000 works by around 280 German artists, with an emphasis on the art of the 1950s and 1960s. After the deaths of Heinz Pachen in 2006 and Hella Pachen in 2007, the town developed a new concept and from 2008 cooperated with, among others, the Städtische Galerie Speyer and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft pfälzer Künstler (association of Palatinate artists).
After the Pachen collection had been sold following a lost inheritance dispute, the city council gave the house the name Museum für Kunst Rockenhausen, matching the neighboring Museum für Zeit. Since 2022 it has combined two important collections of the town: the library of the art dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, born in Mannheim, whose ancestors came from Rockenhausen and who became known as a patron of the Cubists and as Pablo Picasso's gallerist, and the municipal art collection with works of the 20th century.
Exhibitions in the former Kahnweiler House on the market square no longer take place; since then they have been held in the Museum für Kunst. In addition, there are changing exhibitions of contemporary art.
