About the museum
Schloss Oberschwappach was built between 1733 and 1738 as a three-winged complex. Today the municipality of Knetzgau runs its museum there.
In eight Baroque rooms of the east wing, around 130 artworks from the collections of the Diocese of Würzburg have been on display since 2001. They show the diversity of artistic production in Franconia in the 17th and 18th centuries: works by painters and sculptors, goldsmiths, cabinetmakers, printers, weavers and embroiderers, set within stucco-decorated rooms.
In the three-aisled vaulted cellar, an archaeological exhibition shows the settlement of the Steigerwald and Main valley from prehistory to modern times. It also includes the glassworks at Fabrikschleichach, built in 1747 by Balthasar Neumann.
