About the museum

Gerhard Kalnbach from Uchenhofen has collected everything related to firefighting since 1963, especially helmets. He often acquired items in poor condition and restored them himself. This built up a collection of about 150 helmets from across Europe and around 2,200 other items, such as equipment, badges, medals and uniforms.

Since 1987 the collection has been on display, with the support of the municipality of Riedbach, in the former classroom of the Alte Schule in Mechenried. During the renovation of the building, which dates from the Echter period (2003 to 2005), the association Feuerwehrmuseum Mechenried e.V. was founded on May 30, 2005. Kalnbach gave his collection to the association as a permanent loan.

After the redesign, the museum reopened on May 9, 2009, across the entire first floor in four rooms. The board includes the district of Haßberge, the municipality of Riedbach, the Haßberge district fire brigade association and the Mechenried fire brigade club.

Permanent exhibition

• Sammlung zur Feuerwehrgeschichte – Helmets, syringes, uniforms, medals and badges are on display in four rooms on the first floor of the old school.
