About the museum
After Jews were expelled from the Prince-Bishopric in 1560/61, many settled in the surrounding villages, giving rise to the so-called village Jewish communities (Dorfjudenschaften). In Kleinsteinach, a village of around 450 residents, a Jewish community lived for centuries.
The working group "Landjudentum Kleinsteinach," founded in 2013, researched local history, conducted interviews with contemporary witnesses and prepared the museum. It opened on September 30, 2015 in the half-timbered house at Am Kirchplatz 3, which was built in 1715. The operator is the municipality of Riedbach.
Across two floors, the permanent exhibition shows who the protectors (Schutzherren) in the village were, what conditions newcomers had to meet, and what life in the village was like. For the first time, all Jewish participants in World War I from Kleinsteinach are named; the Nazi era is also covered. At a large Mediatisch, visitors can call up all of the village's Jewish families with their houses and house histories. The ensemble also includes the Jewish cemetery and the Taharahaus (ritual washing house).
