About the museum
The workshop on Schulgasse was operated for three generations by the Pflaumer family as a knife smithy and knife grinding shop, most recently until 1992 under Emil Pflaumer. Until his death he kept to the inherited state and preserved everything usable.
His daughters sold the workshop unchanged to the city of Öhringen in 1993. This preserved a cultural monument unique in Baden-Württemberg: it is not individual pieces but the entire ensemble of forge, grinding shop and fittings that constitutes its heritage value.
Since 1997 the workshop has been maintained as a living museum. Local heritage guides demonstrate knife grinding and smithing by prior registration. The house also became known as a filming location for the ARD film about Carl and Bertha Benz in autumn 2010.
