Weygang-Museum
Museum in Öhringen with a significant pewter collection, a historic pewter foundry, a Roman cellar, and town history – open on the first Sunday of the month.
About the museum
The museum goes back to the master pewterer August Weygang (1859–1946). He bequeathed his fortune to the town of Öhringen on the condition that a museum be permanently set up in his home. It opened on May 24, 1953.
The building belongs to the Karlsvorstadt, a Baroque town extension of the 18th century: Prince Friedrich Carl of Hohenlohe-Oehringen had a row of similar houses built along the arterial road to Neuenstein against the medieval town wall. In 1999 the house was comprehensively renovated, and in 2005 the Arbeitskreis Heimatpflege in the Stuttgart administrative district honored it as an exemplary local history museum. In 2011 the town bought back Weygang's workshop equipment along with the molds.
The roughly 6,000 exhibits are spread across several areas: the first floor covers town history, guilds, and Hohenlohe folk art; the second floor covers domestic culture from the Renaissance to Historicism and Weygang's large pewter collection, including his own replicas of Renaissance works. In the cellar, finds from Roman Öhringen are on display, supplemented by a Limes container and a reconstructed Limes gate. Casting is still done in the historic pewter foundry today. Since 1997 a friends' association has supported the museum.
