About the museum
The Niedersächsische Kutschenmuseum (Lower Saxony Carriage Museum) in Lilienthal-Trupe goes back to the Hippologische Gesellschaft Lilienthal-Trupe, a carriage club founded in 1973. Its members wanted to gather old vehicles from the village and surrounding area, carefully restore them and show them to the public. The guiding idea was a living museum: only wagons that are not decaying and can leave the house on their own wheels on special occasions were admitted.
In 1977 a friendly farming family made a barn available to the association, which was converted into a museum. Today it houses more than 40 vehicles, from field wagons through calash, Victoria, coupé and landau to single-axle gigs, dogcarts and pony carts, plus several sleighs and accessories. Some of the wagons carried refugees from East Prussia in 1945.
Members of the association lead visitors through the collection with expertise; thanks to good labeling, a self-guided walk is also possible. The museum belongs to the Lilienthal Museums (LiMu) and opens on individual action days, such as the International Museum Day, often with mail coach rides through Trupe.
