About the museum
The Ostenfelder Bauernhaus is regarded as the oldest open-air museum in Germany. The building was erected before 1600 in the village of Ostenfeld. At the end of the 19th century, Danish museum people wanted to buy the property and move it to Denmark as an open-air museum. The Husum teacher Magnus Voss campaigned for the house to come to Husum instead, where it opened as a museum in 1899.
Since 1997 the Museumsverbund Nordfriesland has run the house as an open-air museum, together with the Nordfriesland Museum. Nissenhaus and the Schloss vor Husum. From 2013 to 2015 the building and its thatched roof were extensively restored.
The museum shows how people and livestock lived under one roof in the large farmhouses of North Frisia. On the tour through the former living quarters, visitors encounter the typical furnishings of the Frisian parlours of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as alcoves (wall beds), the Bilegger stove and the Blink. Tools and household goods round out the picture of everyday farm life. The ensemble includes a farm garden with box-edged beds, perennials, herbs and old apple trees. At some exhibits, QR codes lead to short videos by the museum team.
