Weihnachtshaus Husum
Private museum in Husum on German Christmas customs with several thousand objects on three floors and a historic shop.
About the museum
The Weihnachtshaus (Christmas House) in downtown Husum was built up by the publisher Alix Paulsen and opened on October 24, 2008. The background is the book program of the Verlagsgruppe Husum: folkloric and literary titles on the subject of Christmas provided the impetus for collecting and still accompany the exhibitions today.
The museum is housed in a listed corner building from the Gründerzeit in Westerende, which was extensively restored before the opening. Over three floors there are a good 300 square meters of exhibition space.
The collection comprises several thousand objects from all German regions in which Christmas items were made. On the first floor the focus is on historical Advent calendars, glass Christmas tree ornaments from Thuringia and Franconia, and decorated trees from the Biedermeier period to the postwar era; the second floor is devoted to Ore Mountains folk art with angels, miners, pyramids and candle holders. The tour also includes a Santa Claus workshop.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum shows a special exhibition on a Christmas theme every year. Throughout the year, markets, readings and other events take place. After the tour, a historic shop invites visitors to browse tree ornaments, toys and Christmas literature.
