The Poppenspäler Museum shows figures relating to the biblical story of the Flood, including an ark as a shadow play, complemented by artworks by Richard Haizmann and Otto Beckmann.
The attic gallery presents painted-over record covers by the artist Atif Gülücü.
About the museum
Schloss vor Husum was built between 1577 and 1582 for Duke Adolf of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf in the style of the Dutch Renaissance. Its name (“palace outside Husum”) comes from its location outside the town limits of the time; it is the only sovereign's palace on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein.
In the 17th century it served as the dower residence of the duchesses Augusta and Maria Elisabeth. The elaborately decorated fireplaces, still among the building's showpieces, date from this period. After the Great Northern War, the palace passed to the Danish crown in 1721. When the building threatened to fall into disrepair in the mid-18th century, King Frederick V had it remodeled from 1750 to 1752 and a state apartment installed, which still survives today.
Under Danish and later Prussian rule, the palace was an administrative seat; Theodor Storm worked here as a district judge, and Franziska zu Reventlow was born in the palace. After the district reform of 1970 it lost this role and was restored from 1973, taking the state after the 18th-century remodeling as the model.
Today the Museumsverbund Nordfriesland (North Frisia museum association) runs a palace museum here with historic living quarters, a chapel, and a princely gallery, as well as changing art exhibitions in the attic gallery. Since 2024 the association has also been responsible for the presentation of the Poppenspäler Museum, with more than 1,500 puppet theater objects. The palace park is famous for its crocus bloom in spring.
