Landscape drawings from Otto Ubbelohde’s late work during and after the First World War, created to poems and texts by the forest pastor Karl Ernst Knodt.
The painter, graphic artist and illustrator Otto Ubbelohde (born in Marburg in 1867, died in Goßfelden in 1922) is best known for his pictures for Grimms' fairy tales. After years of apprenticeship and travel in Munich, southern Germany and Worpswede, he settled in the Lahn meadows near Goßfelden in 1900 and built himself a studio there to his own designs, inspired by the English country-house architecture of the architect Hermann Muthesius. The house was extended in 1905 and in 1914/15, partly because Ubbelohde took in pupils in the summer. Together with his wife Hanna he lived and worked here until his early death in 1922.
After Ubbelohde's death the property remained in family ownership; in 1991 the family handed the house and artistic estate over to the Otto-Ubbelohde-Stiftung, founded in the meantime. After renovation, the house and gardens opened as a museum in 1999 – still in Ubbelohde's own century.
Today the foundation and a working group of the municipality of Lahntal run the museum largely on a voluntary basis. Changing exhibitions on Ubbelohde's versatile work and on other artists are shown. The property includes an artist's garden with perennial borders, which is freely accessible at any time. In 2010 a circular trail through Goßfelden was also laid out, linking stations with Ubbelohde's motifs.
Admission is free.
Admission is free; donations are requested.
The house lies in the Lahn floodplain and can only be entered via a stone staircase.
There are no dedicated programs for children, but the “fairy-tale frieze for a nursery” also appeals to young visitors.
