About the museum
The Renchtäler Heimatmuseum (Rench Valley local history museum) first opened in 1938. When the town hall was remodeled in 1974, it moved into the attic, and since 2017 it has been housed in an annex, the former school building from 1899.
The museum aims to give an insight into the town's development and life in the upper Rench valley. It tells how the castle and town of Friedberg and the village of Oppenau, originally "Au des Noppo", developed into a medieval town with a seat of administration and its own court jurisdiction.
The more than 2,500 exhibits are arranged in eight thematic areas: life in the Rench valley, with linen weaving, textile printing, costume and furniture; agriculture and forestry; the Diocese of Strasbourg and the monasteries of Allerheiligen and Oppenau; the parish; Oppenau's history and personalities; the Baden period; art, banners and weapons, with votive painting; and crafts, guilds, the spa business and early industry.
