About the museum

The Römerhalle is housed in a drying barn from the end of the 19th century that belonged to the former Rittergut Bangert estate. On about 1,000 square meters, it displays finds from the Roman period of Bad Kreuznach – ancient Cruciniacum – and its surroundings, from the beginnings of Roman settlement to the late antique fort. The museum is now part of the KulturViertel of the city of Bad Kreuznach.

Directly next to the hall stood an extensive palatial villa in the 2nd century, with over 50 rooms on the ground floor alone. Its floor plan is traced by a modern wall reconstruction and can be walked through. In 1893, the heatable Gladiator Mosaic came to light here, and in 1966 the Oceanus Mosaic was found by chance; between 1975 and 1980 the site was excavated further. Both floors date from the middle of the 3rd century and are almost completely preserved. The Gladiator Mosaic shows animal hunts and duels in the arena, the Oceanus Mosaic the sea god with antlers amid sea creatures, harbors, and ships.

In the basement, a newly designed exhibition around the preserved underfloor heating explains the construction techniques and furnishings of the villa; reconstructed wall paintings at 1:1 scale complete the picture. Other focal points are burial culture and religion, with sarcophagi, a Jupiter column, and Four-Gods stones, some of which were built into the foundations of the fort, as well as the almost life-size gravestones of auxiliary soldiers from Bingerbrück. The modernization of the Römerhalle is a multi-year project carried out jointly with the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
