Strübhaus
Late medieval residence and workshop of the Strüb family of painters in Veringenstadt, with a display on panel painting around 1500.
About the museum
The half-timbered house on the Kirchberg in Veringenstadt was for generations the residence and workshop of the Strüb family of painters, known in art history as the Master of Veringen or Master of Sigmaringen. The family is documented here from the 14th into the 16th century; their altar panels were created mainly in the early 16th century and are today in churches of the region as well as in museums in Germany and throughout Europe.
In the early 1970s the building was threatened with demolition. A citizens' initiative campaigned for its preservation in 1972, acquired the house, and had it repaired; in 1979 this became the Fördergemeinschaft Strübhaus (friends' association). In July 1982 the restored house was opened to the public.
In the historic rooms, faithful reproductions show the work of the Strüb family. It is also explained how late medieval panel paintings were made – from grinding the pigments to painting on the wooden panel. The house can be visited as part of guided tours, which are organized by volunteers.
